I don’t know what’s so special about this video clip from Andy Murray’s match with Michael Llodra at the Australian Open. I play tennis about five times a week and this is pretty standard for my matches…
We’ve heard the claims of those who say they have mastered cold fusion or making cheap fuel from garbage. Much healthy skepticism abounds. Now listen to this fellow. Before you do, note… the presenter is not very skilled at presenting. He is stiff and pedantic. The data he presents is rather technical. Nevertheless, the conclusions are way beyond compelling. They are mind-boggling. Watch…
Thorium, an alternative nuclear fuel
Kirk Sorensen | TED | Jan 12

In 2010, he left NASA to work as the chief nuclear technologist at Teledyne Brown Engineering. In 2011, he founded Flibe, a company focused on developing modular thorium reactors.
If you don’t think this scene is remarkable then you have never been elected to Congress and you have never been shot in the head. This woman’s experience, determination and strength is absolutely astonishing. The elephant in the room has to be the NRA and its insidious campaign against laws which might have prevented such a tragedy. Why are you crying, John Boehner? You and your party are directly responsible for this video and the pain it represents. Shame on you and all who prop you up!
Gabriella Gifford’s Resigns
The Times Editorial on this subject appears after the break…
Let me tell you, some people are simply, inhumanly, assuredly, out of their blinking minds when it comes to taking unnecessary risks. Like this fellow…
Bill Keller, in his op-ed piece in today’s Times cites an article appearing in this month’s issue of Foreign Affairs by Matthew Kroenig, an advisor to the Defense Department. The article is interesting in that it is one of those writings that occur every once in a while that are remembered as one of the key forks in the road leading to a war. Will Kroenig’s article cause WWIII? Probably not. But if the war mongers and fear freaks in Washington and Israel succeed in their insanity toward Iran (more than occasional assassinations) this article will probably be cited as one of the essential steps down that path. For that reason I am posting the complete text of the article here…
Time to Attack Iran
Why a Strike Is the Least Bad Option
Matthew Kroenig | Foreign Affairs | Feb 12
In early October, U.S. officials accused Iranian operatives of planning to assassinate Saudi Arabia’s ambassador to the United States on American soil. Iran denied the charges, but the episode has already managed to increase tensions between Washington and Tehran. Although the Obama administration has not publicly threatened to retaliate with military force, the allegations have underscored the real and growing risk that the two sides could go to war sometime soon — particularly over Iran’s advancing nuclear program.
I have been enjoying an interesting conversation with a friend about architecture. We both agree that a masterpiece of this art was Frank Lloyd Wright’s ‘Falling Water’, the Kauffman house at Bear Run, Pennsylvania. If you have never visited this landmark structure you should. It is on a par with TS Elliot poems, Beethoven’s sonatas or Picasso’s scribbles. Here’s a neat video animation showing why…
Now here’s a performer who’s REALLY cool under pressure…

Oh, and we’re supposed to build a thousand-mile pipeline from Canada to Texas with only two months of review so a bunch of Republican fat cats can pad their investment portfolios and Exxon Mobil can get richer. Meanwhile Canada is destroying a natural ecosystem the size of the State of Florida to get at the tar sands which contain the oil. This is crazy…
Yellowstone Oil Spill Involved More Barrels Than Estimated
Huffington Post | 20 Jan 12
BILLINGS, Mont. — Exxon Mobil says 1,509 barrels of oil spilled into the Yellowstone River during a pipeline break in Montana last summer – an increase of more than 500 barrels over the company’s earlier estimates.
Spokesman Alan Jeffers said Thursday the company recalculated the volume after discovering the pipeline was completely severed during the July 1 accident near Laurel.
Jeffers says pipeline breaches typically involve a crack or fissure. That was the assumption used to craft the initial estimate.
The company has estimated costs related to the spill of $135 million.
More than 1,000 Exxon Mobil contractors were involved in the cleanup effort. Only about 10 barrels of crude were recovered – less than 1 percent of the total spilled.
I have posted Louis before but this clip from Conan Obrian’s show is worthy of another hit. This guy is so on target and so funny he deserves a tax break…
