End of an Era

The era of the Space Shuttle is over. For those of you who missed the ending, here is a video of how it went from the craft’s supersonic arc across Florida to it’s anticlimactic shutdown procedure on the runway at the Kennedy Space Center. It was a strange ending for such a powerful and visible expression of the American Age of Space. Floating to the runway under cover of darkness, mostly unseen by the thousands who stood nearby to witness it, the space shuttle now becomes a relic to be viewed by kids in strollers and grandparents with digital cameras. I am not sad to see the shuttle era come to an end but I am dismayed that America seems to have nothing much to replace it but politician’s promises. And we all know what they’re worth. John Kennedy gave us a dream and the leadership to fulfill it. As the dawn sunlight slowly illuminated the white form of the last of America’s amazing spacecraft on the runway this morning that dream seemed to fade away…
