This evening Chris Matthews shared a excerpt from a letter written by Dr Martin Luther King while he was a guest of the city of Birmingham, Alabama. In the letter Dr King offers his thoughts in response to those who urged him and his people to “wait” for their constitutional rights to eventually trickle down to them. Hearing Dr King’s words immediately called to mind a compelling book I read recently called “The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration” (Amazon) by Isabel Wilkerson. This book clearly illuminates the history of what it was really like to be black in America during the last century. While conditions for blacks and other ethnic/racial groups in this country have improved considerably they are still a long way from the ideal Dr King envisioned. To suggest that we “wait” longer is not good enough…
